Popular Dive locations and SitesCayo RatonThis intermediate site west of Culebre Island is one of the fishiest dives in the Caribbean, with a semi-circular reef that plunges to 60'. Schools of small to medium sized fish inhabit the reef, including butterflyfish and queen angelfish, plus check out the sand for peacock flounders.Patti's ReefAn easy, beginners dive in 20 to 40' of water close to the shores of Vieques Island offers an exceptional dive with lots of sponges and large elkhorn and staghorn corals. There are many cuts and chasms to explore while watching the nurse sharks, mackerels and other pelagics.Angel ReefAnother easy dive near Vieques in 40 to 60' water, Angel Reef is a spur and groove formation, with excellent coral health. Schools of gray angelfish inhabit the reef and there is an ancient Spanish anchor wedged into the reef.Black WallThe Black Wall is named for the the many black coral and black & red gorgonians living on the steep cliff that starts at 60' and extends well below recreational diving depths. The yellow and purple tube sponges help to create a colorful experience. Common fish in the area include triggerfish, hogfish and black durgons.CandylandLocated near Cabo Rojo, this flat topped reef gradually descends to 80' with colorful corals that appear much like candy. This dive site is one that can be used when weather conditions make most others unsafe. Venus sea fans and sponges are mixed with boulder and star coral make up much of the reef, but there is also pillar, brain, flower and cup corals as well. The reef's fish include black durgons, longsnout butterflyfish, and trumpetfish. |
